Outbreak Update

23 June 2019:

In a follow-up on the human Nipah virus case in Ernakulum district of Kerala state, Union health minister Harsh Vardhan told the Lower House of Parliament that out of 36 Pteropus species bats tested for Nipah, 12 (33%) were found to be positive for anti-Nipah bat IgG antibodies, according to a Mathrubhumi report.

Only one case of Nipah virus has been reported so far this year [2019] from Ernakulum district of Kerala and the patient has been discharged. The case was reported in the 1st week of June [2019]. Vardhan said a total of 50 suspects were identified and all of them tested negative for Nipah.

A total of 330 contacts are being followed up on a daily basis and no new case has been reported, he said.

The epidemiological situation of the Ebola virus disease in the provinces of North Kivu and Ituri dated 23 Jun 2019:
Since the beginning of the epidemic, the cumulative number of cases is 2247, of which 2153 confirmed and 94 probable. In total, there were 1510 deaths (1416 confirmed and 94 probable) and 623 people cured;
269 suspected cases under investigation;
8 new confirmed cases, including 3 in Mabalako [North Kivu], 2 in Beni [North Kivu], 1 in Komanda [Ituri], 1 in Biena [North Kivu], and 1 in Musienene [North Kivu];
4 new deaths of confirmed cases, including 1 community death at Biena; 3 ETC deaths -- 2 in Beni and 1 in Mabalako;
2 new recoveries released from ETCs -- 1 in Beni and 1 in Butembo [North Kivu].

141 754 vaccinated;
839 people vaccinated on 23 Jun 2019;
Persons vaccinated by health zone: 34 466 in Katwa, 27 730 in Beni, 18 696 in Butembo, 13 220 in Mabalako [total number of people vaccinated can be seen at the source URL above];
Of those vaccinated, 39 2017 are high-risk contacts (HRC), 72 031 are contacts of contacts (CC), and 30 516 are frontline providers (FLP).
68 710 847 controlled people;
Monitoring activities at the Mukulya strategic checkpoint in Beni were halted following the destruction of the material by strangers during the night of Sun 23 Jun-Mon 24 Jun 2019.

80 entry points (PoE) and health checkpoints (PoC) operational.
122 contaminated health workers;
The cumulative number of confirmed/probable cases among health workers is 122 (5% of all confirmed/probable cases), including 39 deaths.

The committee monitoring the entry points and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) held a technical meeting to operationalize 3 new sanitary checkpoints on the main road Butembo-Mabalako-Aloya, namely Visiki, Mangatu, and Kamahume. 2 of the sanitary checkpoints, Kamahume and Mangatu, were officially inaugurated the same day.
