The epidemiological situation of the Ebola virus disease in the provinces of North Kivu and Ituri dated 18 May 2019:
Since the beginning of the epidemic, the cumulative number of cases is 1816, of which 1728 are confirmed and 88 are probable. In total, there were 1209 deaths (1121 confirmed and 88 probable) and 482 people healed;

291 suspected cases under investigation;

15 new confirmed cases, including 4 in Butembo, 4 in Mabalako, 2 in Katwa, 2 in Beni, 1 in Musienene, 1 in Kalunguta, and 1 in Mandima;

11 new deaths of unconfirmed cases, including 6 community deaths -- 2 in Butembo, 2 in Mabalako, 1 in Katwa, and 1 in Beni; 5 ETC deaths -- 4 in Butembo and 1 in Mabalako;

16 new recoveries released from ETCs -- 12 in Butembo and 4 in Katwa.

Investigations continue around the 1st confirmed patient in the Alimbongo health zone. According to the initial results, the patient was contaminated after participating in an unsecured burial of a family member who died in Katwa.
 

Outbreak Response

119 652 vaccinated persons

792 people vaccinated on 18 May 2019;

of those vaccinated, 32 577 are high-risk contacts, 58 347 are contacts of contacts, and 28 728 are front-line providers;

persons vaccinated by health zone: 31 862 in Katwa, 24 585 in Beni, 14 829 in Butembo [total numbers of people vaccinated in North Kivu, Ituri, Tshopo, and Haut-Uele provinces can be seen at the source URL above];

the only vaccine to be used in this outbreak is the rVSV-ZEBOV vaccine, manufactured by the pharmaceutical group Merck, following approval by the Ethics Committee in its decision of 19 May 2018.

59 010 231 people under control;

80 points of entry and health checkpoints are operational;

disruption of activities at Kiwanja PoC on 18 May 2019 following popular protests;

102 contaminated health workers:

the cumulative number of confirmed/probable cases among health workers is 102 (5.6% of all confirmed/probable cases) including 34 deaths.

In the reporting week 19 (6-12 May 2019) 4 new confirmed cases were reported from 3 states -- Edo (2), Ebonyi (1), and Taraba (1) states with no new deaths;

From 1 Jan-12 May 2019, a total of 2426 suspected cases have been reported from 21 states. Of these, 569 were confirmed positive, 15 probable and 1842 negative (not a case);

Since the onset of the 2019 outbreak, there have been 128 deaths in confirmed cases. Case fatality ratio in confirmed cases is 22.5%;

21 states (Edo, Ondo, Bauchi, Nasarawa, Ebonyi, Plateau, Taraba, FCT [Federal Capital Territory], Adamawa, Gombe, Kaduna, Kwara, Benue, Rivers, Kogi, Enugu, Imo, Delta, Oyo, Kebbi, and Cross River) have recorded at least one confirmed case across 82 local government areas [LGA];

92% of all confirmed cases are from Edo (36%), Ondo (29%), Ebonyi (8%), Bauchi (7%), Taraba (7%) and Plateau (6%) states;

Predominant age-group affected is 21-40 years (range: older than 1 month to 89 years, median age: 32 years);

The male to female ratio for confirmed cases is 1.2:1;

In the reporting week 19, no new health care worker was affected. A total of 18 health care workers have been infected since the onset of the outbreak in 8 states -- Edo (7), Ondo (3), Ebonyi (2), Enugu (1), Rivers (1), Bauchi (1) Benue (1), Plateau (1), and Kebbi (1) with 2 deaths in Enugu and Edo states.

8 patients are currently being managed at various treatment centres across the country: Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital (ISTH) treatment centre (3), Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki (2), Federal Medical Centre Owo (1), Taraba (1), and Kebbi (1)

A total of 7368 contacts have been identified from 20 states. Of these 535 (7.3%) are currently being followed up, 6765 (91.8%) have completed 21 days follow up, while 8 (0.1%) were lost to follow up. 119 (1.6%) symptomatic contacts have been identified, of which 60 (0.8%) have tested positive;

Multi sectoral one health national rapid response teams (NCDC, NFELTP [Nigeria Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Program] and Federal Ministry of Environment) deployed to Kebbi state;

Outbreak emergency phase declared over based on composite indicators;

National Lassa fever multi-partner, multi-sectoral Technical Working Group (TWG) continues to coordinate the response activities at all levels.
