Berlin, 12 October 2025 - Germany is strengthening its commitment to global health. The Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) will be providing EUR100 million through to 2030 to support the international vaccine initiative CEPI (Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations). With this funding pledge, Germany is taking a leading role in the international fight against infectious diseases and pandemics.
Federal Minister of Research, Technology and Space, Dorothee Bär, explains:
“We must contain infectious diseases and pandemics around the world. The coronavirus pandemic has shown us how vulnerable our society can be. At the same time, it became clear what science and international collaboration can achieve to counter global health crises. This is what the international vaccine initiative CEPI stands for. In the current situation, CEPI is more important than ever, so Germany is strengthening its commitment: We will be providing EUR 100 million through to 2030 to support CEPI. This means we are taking responsibility for global health protection and the safety of people worldwide. We are boosting research, promoting innovation and making it clear: Germany can be relied upon.”

Background
The international vaccine initiative CEPI was founded in 2017 after a severe outbreak of Ebola in Africa. It now has more than 30 government and private financial backers, including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The goal is to develop vaccines faster and in a more targeted manner in order to contain local outbreaks early. Germany is a founding member and one of the largest contributors: From 2017 to 2025, Germany provided EUR 590 million of funding to CEPI. EUR 430 million of this was for CEPI’s coronavirus portfolio during the unprecedented emergency in the pandemic. Germany is now announcing a further contribution to CEPI of EUR 100 million through to 2030, sending an important message on international collaboration in global health. Under its “100 Days Mission”, CEPI’s aim is to provide a vaccine candidate within 100 days of new infectious diseases emerging. The initiative places particular emphasis on fair, global access to the vaccines that are developed.
