In support of the G20 efforts on global health, Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, announced an additional CAD10 million contribution to the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), which will help us develop new life-saving vaccines to combat emerging infectious diseases.
Commenting on this announcement from the Government of Canada, Richard Hatchett, (CEO of CEPI) said:
We are delighted and hugely grateful that Canada is further increasing their contribution to our work. The current outbreak of Ebola in DRC–the largest since 2014–is a timely reminder to the world of the devastation these terrible diseases can cause. It's only through collective action that we can hope to protect the world from the threat of epidemics and we warmly welcome Canada's contribution to that effort.
Canada provided an initial investment of CAD4 million shortly after the coalition was formed at Davos in 2017. To date, CEPI has received funding worth over USD630 million from Australia, Belgium, Canada, the European Commission, Germany, Japan, Norway, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Wellcome Trust.
