The Global Pandemic Preparedness Summit 2024
This two-day in-person Summit was hosted in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, between July 29 and 30. It brought together R&D and manufacturing experts, government officials, civil society representatives and leaders from industry and the global health community.
The Summit focussed on three central themes of the global pandemic preparedness agenda that, if aligned, could transform the world’s ability to respond quickly and equitably to the next Disease X threat. The Summit will also be live-streamed and a recording will be made available online after the event.
Summit Focus Areas
Equitable access to vaccines, medicines and other health technologies through geographical diversification and strengthening of R&D and local and regional production
By bolstering local and regional capacity and capability to produce health technologies in underserved regions, the world can respond to epidemic and pandemic threats more equitably
Delivering the 100 Days Mission for vaccines, diagnostics and therapeutics
To prevent future outbreaks from spiralling into pandemic threats, the world needs the ability to develop pandemic-busting vaccines, tests and treatments within 100 days of pathogen identification and for these innovations to be accessed equitably. This goal—known as the 100 Days Mission—has been embraced by leaders of the G7 and G20.
Enhancing global disease surveillance
Disease surveillance is crucial for identifying and responding to emerging pandemic threats. Effective surveillance systems are essential to detecting disease outbreaks quickly before they spread, cost lives and become difficult to control.
